End Citizens United Fighting to Make a Change in the Campaign Finance System

May 19, 2018

In the American political system the Citizens United Supreme Court decision has been devastating for the every man in the country. The decision has permitted corporations to be able to donate as much money as they want to political campaigns. This allows corporations to have more control over government and politicians and what kind of laws are decided on in this country. This is the exact reverse of the type of government that this country was originally founded upon. “Government for the people, by the people” requires politicians who are true representations of the people and are not influenced in their decisions from special interest money. After the majority of the supreme court ruled in favor of Citizens United, Justice Stevens -who was in opposition to the decision- made a statement. “The Path it has taken to reach its outcome will, I fear, do damage to this institution. A democracy cannot function effectively when its constituent members believe laws are being bought and sold.” he said.

End Citizens United is countering the mistake that is Citizens United by raising political campaign money from a grassroots level and by supporting candidates who are against taking special interest money. They have successfully raised millions already for the 2018 midterm elections. End Citizens United has additionally put forth several lists to help their goals for 2018 and the future. The lists of endorsed candidates they support show a selection of different candidates who have vowed not to take special interest money to support their campaigns. They are candidates who are not bought off and are running solely on grassroots donations from End Citizens United or other grassroots movements. The other list End Citizens United has put together is more of a hit list. It’s a list of the worst of the worst in the American political system currently who are owned by special interest money. Ending Citizens United is a possibility with this amount of support from the public and organizations that are set on ending the Supreme Court decision that has put our democracy is jeopardy of ever being trusted again.
